Epoxy primer is a sealer that produces a good surface finish on applied top coats. A two-part epoxy primer contains zinc phosphate, which acts as a corrosion-inhibiting pigment. Epoxy primers can be used to waterproof materials that consequently protect the bare metal from oxidation.
Advantages of Epoxy Primer Paint
Better adhesion
Epoxy primers are known for their excellent adhesion properties. They form a strong bond with the metal surface, which helps prevent the paint or coating from peeling or flaking off over time. On the other hand, etch primers rely on a chemical reaction to etch the metal surface, which may not be as effective in providing long-lasting adhesion.
Enhanced corrosion resistance
Epoxy primers are formulated to provide excellent corrosion resistance. They create a barrier that prevents moisture and other corrosive elements from reaching the metal surface, thereby reducing the risk of rust formation. Etch primers, on the other hand, do not provide as much protection against corrosion.
Improved durability
Epoxy primers are known for their superior durability. They are resistant to abrasion, impact, and other forms of mechanical damage, which makes them ideal for use in harsh environments. Etch primers are not as durable and may require more frequent maintenance to keep the metal surface protected.
Versatile
Epoxy primers can be used on a wide range of substrates, including steel, aluminium, and other metals, as well as fiberglass, wood, and even some plastics. This makes them a versatile choice for many different types of applications. Etch primers, on the other hand, are generally only suitable for use on metal surfaces.
Easy to apply
Epoxy primers are easy to apply and can be sprayed, brushed, or rolled onto the metal surface. They also have a relatively long pot life, which gives the applicator plenty of time to apply the primer before it sets. Etch primers, on the other hand, require careful surface preparation and may be more difficult to apply.

Types of Epoxy Primer Paint
High-build epoxy primers
These primers have a higher solids content, allowing for thicker film builds. They are ideal for filling in surface imperfections and creating a smooth substrate for subsequent coats.
Water-based epoxy primers
As the name suggests, these primers have water-based instead of solvent-based formulations. They are low in vocs (volatile organic compounds) and offer easy cleanup, making them environmentally friendly options.
Zinc-rich epoxy primers
These primers contain a high concentration of zinc particles, providing excellent corrosion protection for metal surfaces. They act as a sacrificial barrier, preventing rust and extending the lifespan of the coated material.
When to Use Epoxy Primer on a Project
Over bare, clean metal
Epoxy primers are amazing at sealing up bare metal and from allowing moisture or corrosion to creep in. Epoxy primer actually seals out the oxygen from the metal, leaving no chance of rust or corrosion forming on the surface like some cheap spray bomb type primers. Etch primer included, epoxy primer is about the only bare metal primer you could leave a vehicle outside in without rust forming back under the primer quickly! Two-part epoxy primers go one step further by including zinc phosphate, which increases its corrosion-inhibiting properties. Simply put, epoxy is the best primer for bare metal, making it excellent for newly fabricated metal parts or ones that have been fully stripped.
Mixed surfaces
Some primers and coatings need the entire surface to be uniform and all the same material. Epoxy primers have excellent adhesion properties and will stick to bare metal, paints, primers and fillers. This means you can hit an area with epoxy primer that's been sanded down to bare metal, repaired with body filler, and then feathered into the original paint. We suggest blending these areas as well as possible before spraying epoxy primers as they doesn't have filling/build qualities like a high-build primer and won't hide imperfections as well. Alternatively, you can apply filler or primer surfacer over the epoxy to fill any minor imperfections and block flat before you paint.
Stacking coatings
Since epoxy primers adhere mechanically, they will grab onto most anything that has a good texture to the surface. For this reason, it works well for stacking if you need to correct an area that you didn't get perfectly flat and need a little more filler. Just abrade with sandpaper, apply your filler, sand flat and feather the edges. Then you can apply more epoxy primer over top and repeat as needed. This can't be said for many primers!
Use it for a final sealer
A cool trick we've been doing for the past few years is using our epoxy primer as a final sealer before our base coat. Simply reduce it 50 percent and lay a coat or two down to seal up all of your work and have a nice surface to lay your base coat over top of. The primer has excellent adhesion to most topcoats and will help keep actual paint from flaking or peeling. This is great peace of mind for a lasting paint job.
Use it to protect a long-term project
Not all of us have huge, climate controlled shops our project vehicles can sit in until they're painted. This means you may have to push the project outside overnight or while you do maintenance on the daily driver. Maybe you have a damp shop that flash rusts metal as soon as the temps change? I like to use epoxy primer to seal my work at the end of the day. This way, if I can't get back to it right away, I won't come back to a surface-rusted mess! Keep a handful of our 2k aerospray™ epoxy primer aerosols on hand for sealing up small areas. They will save you time compared to getting out the spray gun, mixing up primer and then having to clean everything back up!
Epoxy Primer Paint Coating Process

Pretreatment
Before applying primer on the work, make sure the surface is free of any dust and rust. For rust removal, use rust removal chemicals (shot blasting is an ideal method for rust removal) such as 3-in-1 chemicals. (mix with water in a 1:1 ratio.) to remove oil or grease from the work surface, clean the surface with thinner.
Primer coating
Before applying primer, make sure it is cleaned and prepared with proper pretreatment. Primer contains two packages, one is a 4-liter package of primer and the other is a 1-liter package of hardener. Mix the required amount of primer and hardener (mixing ratio is 4:1 volume ratio primer and hardener). After mixing the two components in proper proportion, stir well and let the mixture stand for 5-10 minutes. Use thinner ep-102 to adjust the viscosity of the mixture to be suitable for spraying. Let the primed workpiece dry for at least overnight.
Application of putty
After overnight, apply tuff-seal putty (mixed in 1:1 ratio) where needed. If the putty is found to be a little thick, add a small amount of epoxy thinner during mixing. After drying, sand properly and touch up the puttyed area with primer.
Topcoat (epoxy paint)
The day after applying the primer, check the hardness of the primer before applying the topcoat. Paint consists of two parts. One part is the primer and the other part is the hardener. Take two containers of the same type and capacity, and fill them with the required amount of paint and hardener respectively (mixing ratio is primer:Hardener, volume ratio is 4:1) after mixing these two components in proper proportion, stir well and let it stand for 5-10 minutes. Use thinner ep-102 to adjust the viscosity suitable for spraying. After applying the first coat, let it dry for at least 6-7 hours. Apply the second coat.
Make sure
The water in the compressor is drained every morning. Do not spray paint after 2pm do not allow water to come into contact with the paint before painting make sure there is no physical contact with the paint film before the paint is dry.
How Epoxy Coatings Protect Garage Floors
High epoxy solids
The percentage of solids in an epoxy coating determines the durability and performance of the floor coating. Most epoxy coatings sold at general building supply stores have a low percentage of solids. Ultimately, the higher the percentage of solids in an epoxy coating, the more epoxy the product will retain throughout the curing process. For example, in a 100% solids epoxy, 100% of the epoxy product will remain on the floor after it is applied and dried. Essentially, the higher the percentage of solids in an epoxy coating, the thicker the final coating will be and the better the floor will be protected.
High dry film thickness
Dry film thickness (dft) is the final thickness of the protective coating. Basically, the higher the solids content, the greater the dft. Dft is an area where most diy epoxy coating kits from typical home improvement stores cannot reach. First, many epoxy coating kits do not use authentic epoxy. They often use a latex formula that contains a small amount of solids. So even though it is cheaper and easier to apply, your protective layer will be thinner. This means it is more susceptible to wear and tear, and you may need to reapply after a few years.
Resists hot tire pickup
It is well known that tires can reach high temperatures. Unfortunately, if your garage floor has a cheap coating, hot tires will peel off the floor. However, a quality epoxy can completely protect your floor from hot tires. They resist heat and chemicals, so your floor coating remains intact and beautiful.
After the epoxy primer is opened and dispensed, it needs to be used up within 2 hours, and the dosage must be well controlled. If the epoxy primer cannot be used up, it cannot be poured back into the original paint. will be wasted.
When using epoxy primer, it is possible to use high-pressure airless spraying, but the conditions are limited, so air spraying can be used, which can make the paint film on the wall flatter.
The epoxy primer should be stored in a cool and dry place, so that it is less likely to deteriorate, and the shelf life of the epoxy primer is usually about two years.
When distributing the epoxy primer, it needs to be distributed according to the proportion in the instructions. If the distribution is too thick, you can appropriately pour some thinner into it.
When the epoxy primer paint is sprayed or brushed, it must be ensured that every corner can be painted to avoid any leakage.
When using epoxy primer, the content that needs to be diluted is about 25%~30% of the total paint; the amount that needs to be brushed is about 10% of the total paint.
After the epoxy primer painting stage is completed, you need to wait about 5 to 7 days to ensure that it can be completely dried. If it is raining, it is recommended not to carry out construction, the effect is relatively poor.
After the paint film of the epoxy primer is completely dry, the next step can be checked, mainly to see the weather resistance and rust resistance of the paint film.
Safety Precautions When Using the Epoxy Primer Paint
Always wear safety glasses or goggles, gloves, a respirator, and protective clothing. These can help you protect yourself against vapors emitted by epoxy-containing products or epoxy dust and/or wood dust.
Ensure that your workspace has adequate ventilation. By taking this step, you can prevent dust and other irritants from entering the area, help lower levels of chemical vapors in the environment, and allow fresh air to enter your workspace.
If you develop reactions to any products with epoxy, stop using it right away and resume the process after a few days. Some reactions that are attributed to contact with epoxy products include skin and eye irritation; allergic reactions on the skin; nasal, throat, or lung irritation, asthma-like signs, or breathing difficulties. If symptoms persist, consult your doctor and/or seek medical attention immediately.
Follow the storage and clean-up instructions stated by the manufacturer to prevent severe damage to your work area. Some epoxy products are known to have flammable materials.
Using epoxy primers and paints may seem daunting at first, especially if you're a beginner. However, when you know more about their purposes and how to handle them safely and securely, you're sure to find reasons to keep using them.
