Alkyd paint is an enamel finish that has a similar consistency to oil paint. They usually have thinners made from either alcohol or mineral spirits. However, alkyd quick-dry primers and topcoats can't be thinned with mineral spirits. The type of thinner used will control how the paint flows as well as drying time.

Types of Alkyd Enamel
Pf-115
Is used for exterior work and is applied in two layers, because it has a small covering capacity (30-120 g / sq.M.). It is applied on metal, wooden and other types of surfaces using a brush or sprayer, dries within 8-24 hours. Gives the surface a rich color and shine.
Pf-126
Usually comes complete with nf-1 filler, which significantly accelerates hardening. It is applied with a brush or a sprayer in two layers with intermediate drying in about 40 minutes. Before applying this type of alkyd enamel, the surface is primed with enamel diluted with white spirit.
Pf-133
This alkyd enamel is used on metal surfaces or on surfaces that have been previously primed. It is applied in two layers, and has 15 not very bright shades in the palette. Able to preserve its properties for 5 years from the moment of application, does not crack and is not subject to mechanical damage.
Pf-223
Used for interior work on metal and wooden surfaces. Perfect for applying to radiators, as it can withstand high temperatures. Another area of application is wooden floors, on which this type of alkyd enamel should be applied with a wide brush. It is diluted with xylene, solvent or gasoline to the desired consistency. It has 17 shades in the palette that satisfy any aesthetic preferences. The drying time is 30-36 hours.
Gf-230
Glyphthalic paint intended for interior work. It is used for finishing walls and ceilings, and before application it is diluted to the required consistency using turpentine or white spirit. It has a wide palette of colors and can be applied with a brush, roller or sprayer. It dries in about a day, has a rather strong smell.
Application of Alkyd Enamel

Alkyd enamel in paints and coatings
Alkyd enamel is commonly used as a binder for oil-based paints and coatings. Its excellent adhesion, durability, and weatherability make it ideal for exterior applications such as metal structures, architectural surfaces, and marine coatings. In addition, its ability to form a hard film makes it suitable for industrial coatings, including machinery, equipment, and automotive painting.
Wood finishes
Alkyd enamel is commonly used in wood finishing and varnishes because it enhances the natural beauty of wood while providing protection against moisture, uv rays, and abrasion. It is used in furniture coatings, floor finishing, and outdoor wood applications.
Adhesives
The bonding properties of this resin make it an important ingredient in adhesive and sealant formulations. It is used in the production of laminates, plywood, and adhesives for various substrates.
Printing inks
Alkyd enamel is an essential ingredient in printing ink formulations, including lithographic, letterpress, and screen printing inks. Its ability to impart gloss, color retention, and printability make it a top choice for high-quality printing applications.
Industrial applications
In industrial settings, this resin is used for corrosion protection coatings on steel structures, pipelines, and tanks. Its protective properties make it valuable in applications that require long-term durability.
Automotive finishing
The automotive industry uses alkyd enamels to produce vehicle primers, topcoats, and clearcoats. It is widely used in automotive refinishing because it provides a smooth, glossy surface with excellent weather resistance.
Marine coatings
This resin is used in marine coatings for ships, boats, and offshore structures due to its resistance to saltwater, uv rays, and harsh environmental conditions. It provides long-lasting protection against corrosion and abrasion in marine environments.
Building materials
Alkyd enamels are incorporated into building materials such as concrete sealers, masonry coatings, and protective coatings for metal and concrete surfaces. It is valuable in building applications because it enhances the durability and appearance of building materials.
Electrical insulation
In the electrical industry, this resin is used as an insulating material in wire enamels, impregnation varnishes, and electrical laminates. Its dielectric properties and thermal stability make it suitable for electrical insulation applications.
Other applications
In addition to the uses mentioned above, alkyd enamels are used in a variety of other applications including metal coatings, can coatings, coil coatings, and specialty industrial products.
When Deciding Between Alkyd Resin Vs Acrylic Resin, Consider the Following Factors
Surface
Alkyd resin is suitable for surfaces that require a high gloss finish, while acrylic resin is better suited for surfaces that require flexibility and impact resistance.
Durability
If you need a coating that can withstand heavy wear and tear, alkyd resin may be the better choice. If you need a coating that can withstand scratches and abrasions, acrylic resin may be more suitable.
Safety
Alkyd resin requires solvents for application, which can be hazardous to inhale. Acrylic resin is safer to use because it is water-based.
Budget
Alkyd resin can be more expensive than acrylic resin due to its composition and manufacturing process.
Alkyd resin vs acrylic resin are two popular coating materials with distinct characteristics and applications. While alkyd resin offers high durability and a high gloss finish, acrylic resin provides flexibility and non-yellowing properties. By understanding the advantages and disadvantages of each material, artists, craftspeople, and professionals can make informed decisions about which coating material to use for their project.
Type of alkyd enamel
The choice of solvent directly depends on which alkyd enamel is to be used. So, for PF-223, mainly xylene, solvents or gasoline are used, while for GF-230, mainly turpentine or white spirit are used;
Drying time
Determine which drying time will meet your needs. Solvents can significantly affect this process. For example, the use of turpentine will prolong the drying process after the alkyd enamel is applied;
Toxicity
Be aware of the presence of toxicity and pungent odors. If the surface is in a child's room, then the best solvent choice for alkyd paint will be white spirit, which is the safest;
Abrasion resistance
Don't forget that some surfaces, especially outdoor surfaces, require significant resistance to moisture, sunlight, etc. Therefore, for such a painting, you can choose a solvent with a pungent odor and a longer drying time, but after the alkyd enamel is applied, it will increase the durability of the coating.
How to Rate a Quality, Durable Alkyd Enamel Paint
Paint pigments
Quality paints have a higher concentration of pigments to ensure better coverage and color retention. Pigments determine the color and opacity of the paint. The thicker the pigment, the more you can guarantee the appearance of the paint over time.
Volume solids
The higher the volume solids percentage, the higher the paint solids content and the less solvents. The thicker and more durable the paint film. Paints with higher volume solids content are more durable and can better protect the exterior of your home.
Resin content
Resins are an important paint component that determines adhesion and durability. Choose paints with higher resin content because resins form stronger, longer-lasting paint films.
Paint brands
Choose a well-known paint brand. You want a stable, high-performance product that has been rigorously tested and quality controlled.
