Types of Zinc Rich Epoxy Primer

    Organic
These types of primers can be applied in a variety of ways including spray, roller, and brush. These are known for protecting the steel a degree less than inorganic zinc-rich primers do.

    Inorganic
These types of primers are best if they are spray applied and don't have to have a top coat. They generally provide better protection with no top coat than you'd find with an organic zinc primer without a top coat.

Either one of the two types of zinc-rich primers can have a top coat painted on after the primer has been applied. In fact, having a top coat of paint or another coating increases the protection of the steel. Simple math shows that there is then 2 separate barriers for the steel versus the one primer coat. If the top paint chips or fades, the zinc primer will still protect the steel.

There are special steps to follow before applying a primer to a piece of steel including blasting the steel and applying a salt remover. The members of team ppc are experts in the field. We know all the correct steps to make sure every job is done correctly the first time and done in a way that will last.

The Application Process of Zinc-Rich Epoxy Primer Involves Several Key Steps

    Surface preparation
The first step is to thoroughly clean the surface to remove dirt, grease, rust and other contaminants. For heavily rusted surfaces, consider sandblasting or power tool cleaning.
Apply one to two coats of rusticide, rust remover and passivator.
Before applying the primer, make sure the surface is dry and free of moisture. Ideally, the surface temperature should be within the recommended range specified on the product data sheet.

    Mixing and thinning
Most zinc-rich epoxy primers consist of two parts: A resin component and a hardener. Mix them thoroughly according to the manufacturer's instructions, using the recommended volume ratio of resin to hardener.
Depending on the application method and desired viscosity, some primers may need to be thinned with specific solvents. Use only recommended solvents and follow the thinning ratio guidelines closely.

    Application methods
Choose the appropriate application method based on the size and complexity of your project. Options include brushing, rolling or spraying (airless or conventional). Each method has its advantages and limitations, so choose the one that best suits your needs and skills. Apply thin, even coats, ensuring complete coverage of the surface. Pay close attention to corners, edges and welds. Follow the recommended drying time specified on the product data sheet, allowing each coat to dry completely before applying the next. Generally, two to three coats are recommended for optimal protection.

    Curing
Allow the final coat to cure completely before further use or exposure of the surface. Curing times may vary depending on the product and ambient temperature. Refer to the manufacturer's recommendations for specific curing times.

    FAQ

Q: What is the difference between epoxy primer and zinc rich primer?

A: The main difference between the two is the difference in anti-corrosion and anti-rust effects. The epoxy zinc rich primer is mainly chemical anti-corrosion and anti-rust, and has a corrosion inhibition effect; while the epoxy zinc phosphate primer is mainly corrosion and anti-rust and has a shielding effect.

Q: What is zinc rich primer?

A: Zinc rich primers contain zinc metal in a finely powdered form for the protection of steel against corrosion. The zinc metal protects the steel galvanically by corroding sacrificially in preference to the steel. Zinc rich primers include epoxies, inorganic silicates and chlorinated rubbers.

Q: How to apply zinc rich epoxy primer?

A: All surfaces must be clean, dry and free of loose rust, oil, grease and all other contamination. Apply by spray for best results. The Zinc Rich Epoxy Primer may also be applied by brush for small touch up areas.

Q: Is zinc rich primer better than red oxide?

A: Zinc chromate and red oxide are two pigments that are commonly used in metal primers. Zinc chromate provides more corrosion resistance than red oxide, although red oxide is excellent for exposure to sunlight and exterior exposure.

Q: What is the difference between primer and epoxy primer?

A: In general, urethane primers are not as moisture tolerant as epoxy primers so the substrate must be dry prior to application. The exact limit is determined by the manufacturer. The cure time of urethane primers is often much faster than epoxy primers and have a slightly lower temperature minimum for application.

Q: Can you put epoxy primer over old paint?

A: Custom 421 and EM121 can be applied to previously painted surfaces, as well as to bare metal. Just make sure that the existing paint is well adhered – see our guide to performing an adhesion test here.

Q: When to use zinc primer?

A: Zinc-rich primers, and all galvanic systems, are perfect primers for steel assets in highly corrosive environments. Zinc is particularly useful in marine, tanker and underground applications, i.e., immersive environments. Any environment exposed to constant moisture will benefit from a zinc primer.

Q: What is epoxy primer best used for?

A: Simply put, epoxy is the best primer for bare metal, making it excellent for newly fabricated metal parts or ones that have been fully stripped. 2. Mixed Surfaces – Some primers and coatings need the entire surface to be uniform and all the same material.

Q: How long does zinc rich primer last?

A: There are several combinations of zinc-rich primers with different topcoats listed, but the typical inorganic zinc/epoxy/polyurethane system is reported to last 30 years in a mild (rural) environment and 15 years in a seacoast or heavy industrial environment.

Q: Can you paint over zinc rich primer?

A: In general, coatings that have poor alkali resistance should not be applied directly to zinc-rich primers. Coatings with oil-containing vehicles such as oil paints, alkyd enamels, vinyl alkyds of the oxidizing type, long oil silicone alkyds, and epoxy esters should not be applied directly to zinc-rich primers.

Q: What is zinc rich epoxy primer formulation?

A: The epoxy zinc-rich primer comprises the following components in percentage by mass: component A: 10-15% of E20 epoxy resin, 0.2-0.4% of dispersant, 2-4% of barium petroleum sulfonate, 30-50% of zinc powder, 10-20% of composite iron-titanium, 5-10% of sericite, 1-1.2% of organic bentonite, and 18.25-21.6% of mixed ...

Q: Can you spray zinc primer over rust?

A: The reason for the white metal is because zinc cannot be applied over rust of any kind – even flash rust. Reason is that zinc is self-scarifying, meaning it will give itself up to corrosion or being corroded or turning itself into rust to protect the surface under it.

Q: What temperature should zinc rich epoxy primer be?

A: Environmental temperature must be 10-40°c. must be free of ice and relative humidity below 80 %.

Q: What do you mix with epoxy primer?

A: Primer consists of two Packs, one is Base which is 4 Liter packing & another called Hardener in 1 Liter Packing. 3. Mix the desired quantity of Base & hardener (Mixing Ratio is 4: 1 Base to Hardener by volume).

Q: What does zinc rich primer do?

A: Zinc rich primers are used to protect steel surfaces from corrosion. It is one of the more effective means of sealing critical equipments from moisture, protecting it from rust and corrosion.

Q: Which is better, red oxide or epoxy primer?

A: Redoxide vs Epoxy Primer Epoxy Primer has better chemical resistance, abrasion resistance and adhesion than Redoxide. Epoxy primer will chalk under UV, thus a topcoat is recommended when used outdoor.

Q: How to apply zinc primer?

A: The article provides several key points to help make sure a zinc rich primer performs as intended, including these: follow manufacturer's data sheet and application instructions; use proper equipment that is in good working order; use minimum hose lengths for the best results; apply full, even, wet coats of the primer; ...

    Q: Does zinc stop rust?

A: It has strong anticorrosive properties and bonds well with other metals. Consequently, about one-half of the zinc that is produced is used in zinc galvanizing, which is the process of adding thin layers of zinc to iron or steel to prevent rusting.

Q: What temperature should zinc primer be?

A: Moreover, the temperature of the zinc rich primer paint generally does not exceed 100 ℃. An inorganic zinc rich primer paint can be used in the temperature below 400 ℃ as well as the aqueous soluble or alcohol soluble inorganic zinc rich primer paint.

Q: What is the difference between epoxy primer and zinc primer?

A: Inorganic zinc rich primer is better than epoxy zinc rich primer in terms of heat resistance, solvent resistance, chemical resistance and static electricity, but the paint film has poor flexibility and construction performance. Inorganic zinc rich primer has some special requirements during construction.
