What is the difference between acrylic polyurethane and polyurethane?
Acrylic polyurethane and polyurethane are both types of protective finishes used in various applications, such as wood finishing, automotive coatings, and industrial coatings. While they share the common element of polyurethane, there are differences between them in terms of composition, properties, and applications.
Composition:
Acrylic Polyurethane: This type of finish is a combination of acrylic and polyurethane resins. Acrylic resins contribute to the clarity, hardness, and durability of the finish, while polyurethane resins provide flexibility, adhesion, and chemical resistance.
Polyurethane: In a general sense, polyurethane refers to a finish that contains polyurethane resins. This can include both water-based and oil-based formulations. Polyurethane finishes are known for their toughness, durability, and resistance to abrasion.
Base (Water-based vs. Oil-based):
Acrylic Polyurethane: Typically water-based, which means it has a lower level of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) compared to oil-based finishes. It dries faster and has less odor.
Polyurethane: It can be either water-based or oil-based. Oil-based polyurethane tends to have a stronger odor and a longer drying time compared to water-based polyurethane.
Appearance:
Acrylic Polyurethane: Generally has a clear and non-yellowing appearance. It tends to maintain the natural color of the substrate (e.g., wood) better than some oil-based polyurethanes.
Polyurethane: Oil-based polyurethanes may have an amber or yellowish tint, which can deepen over time. Water-based polyurethanes are usually clearer and have less impact on the natural color of the substrate.
Application:
Acrylic Polyurethane: Often used for interior applications such as furniture, cabinets, and woodwork. It is known for its resistance to chemicals, water, and household chemicals.
Polyurethane: Suitable for both interior and exterior applications. Oil-based polyurethanes are often used for surfaces that require a high level of durability and water resistance, such as floors. Water-based polyurethanes are commonly used for interior woodwork and furniture.
Durability:
Acrylic Polyurethane: Offers good durability and resistance to wear, but it may not be as hard as some oil-based polyurethanes.
Polyurethane: Generally known for its excellent durability, toughness, and resistance to abrasion.
When choosing between acrylic polyurethane and polyurethane, consider factors such as the specific application, desired appearance, environmental considerations, and the level of durability required for the project. Additionally, always follow the manufacturer's guidelines and recommendations for application and maintenance.
